The United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) has officially completed its Prescott and Russell Residence Redevelopment Project, with residents scheduled to move into the new long-term care home on October 21 and 22.
Launched in February 2021, the $93-million project replaces the former residence at 1020 Cartier Boulevard in Hawkesbury with a modern facility at 900 Spence Street. The new building adds 78 beds, increasing the residence’s total capacity to 224.
“Our teams are mobilized and ready to ensure a safe, coordinated, and comfortable move for all of our residents,” said Alexandre Gorman, administrator of the Prescott and Russell Residence. “This is a well-planned logistical operation that will be carried out with care to ensure a smooth and successful transition for everyone.”
The move will cover approximately one kilometre between the former facility and the new residence. Residents will be accompanied by health-care professionals, community partners, family members and friends throughout the transition.
According to Stéphane P. Parisien, chief administrative officer of the UCPR, the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care recently confirmed that the new facility and its equipment are ready to welcome residents.
“Our priority has always been to deliver a Residence that offers high-quality living environments and care that exceed industry standards and that is exactly what we have accomplished,” Parisien said. “This is a major milestone for the largest project ever undertaken by the UCPR.”
UCPR Warden Mario Zanth also highlighted the importance of the additional beds in meeting the region’s growing long-term care needs.
“We are extremely pleased to have carried out this project, which is of great importance to our regional community, particularly thanks to the addition of 78 new beds, which will allow us to continue meeting the growing needs of our population,” Zanth said.
On behalf of county council, Zanth wished residents and their loved ones well during the move and thanked residence staff and project partners for their contributions.
A modernized long-term care home
The Prescott and Russell Residence is a bilingual specialized long-term care home managed by the UCPR. The former facility opened in the fall of 1978.
The new 193,000-square-foot building features a central courtyard, interior courtyards and large windows designed to maximize natural light. Amenities include a multi-purpose hall, dining rooms, landscaped outdoor spaces and a beauty salon, as well as standard, semi-private and private rooms.
The residence also includes modern workspaces and equipment, with care stations at the entrance to each of its seven living areas. Additional space beyond minimum requirements was incorporated to support daily activities and operations.
The $93-million project received support from the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care, the Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure and the UCPR.
