The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) issued a warning regarding an increase in measles cases globally, reminding parents to vaccinate their children against the illness.
In December, the World Health Organization reported an increase in measles cases in Europe and the Pan-American Health Organization also reported an increase in travel related cases in North and South America. Though no cases have yet to be reported in Eastern Ontario, there are currently four active cases in Canada, two in Peel Region and two in the City of Toronto.
The EOHU warns that travel during the approaching March break poses a risk of increased exposure. The health unit is reminding parents of the importance of vaccination as a preventative measure against many illnesses, including measles.
“We are asking you to make sure you and your children are up to date on immunizations, including the measles vaccine (MMR), especially if you are planning to travel,” reads the EOHU’s statement.
Children in Ontario receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, once on their first birthday and a second dose between the age of four and six.
Those not up to date on their vaccinations are asked to contact their primary health care provider. Individuals without a primary care provider can receive their routine immunizations from the EOHU.
If someone is experience symptoms of measles after travelling, or fear they may have been in contact with someone with measles, they are asked to contact their health care provider or the EOHU at 613-933-1375 or 1-800-267-7120.
