RDHS student stabbed by colleague at Rockland Giant Tiger

A student from Rockland District High School was stabbed by a colleague at the Giant Tiger on Laurier Street, forcing nearby schools into a “hold and secure” safety protocol Friday afternoon, September 29.

Around 12:30 p.m., both RDHS and L’Escale moved into Hold and Secure, a safety procedure bringing students inside the school, locking all exterior doors and continuing lessons as usual.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the incident around 11:45 a.m. and located a youth with “serious, but non-life-threatening injuries,” who was then transported to hospital by Prescott-Russell Emergency Medical Services.

Early reporting indicates a Grade 11 student was stabbed in the neck by a Grade 9 student at Giant Tiger following an altercation in which one accused the other of stealing their personal belongings.

As the accused is under the age of 18 the youth’s identity cannot be released under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police said there is no concern for public safety.

Anyone with information regarding the incident are asked to contact Russell County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.  Anonymous tips can be brought to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2000.
