Local branch hosts celebration in honour of Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 554 in Rockland celebrated the historic 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion with a community celebration on Friday, July 17.

The evening celebration, which was attended by 85 guests, featured music provided by local radio station BIG FM, games and other entertainment to commemorate the milestone.

Branch 554 President Robert Gagnon actively rallied the community, highlighting the Legion’s century-long mandate of advocating for veterans, supporting their families, and preserving the spirit of remembrance.

The Rockland event was part of a larger, nationwide rollout commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion’s official incorporation on July 17, 1926. A major national celebration occurred at the National War Memorial in Ottawa featuring dignitaries, veterans, and the public.

To commemorate its 100 years, the Legion offered free memberships to all first-time members joining in 2026. Canada Post released a special stamp to mark the occasion, and cities across the country proclaimed July 17 as « Royal Canadian Legion Centenary Day ».
